It has come to our attention that several former members of our Discord community are displeased about being banned from our Discord. While we understand their frustrations, we would like to take this moment to remind them and everyone else that, unlike the actual blockchain, Discord servers are not open, permissionless networks. More importantly, they are not safe spaces where threats against the privacy and/or safety of others are protected or ignored. Threatening GenGo team members in any Discord and then appearing to take steps to act on said threats is something that will never be tolerated. Over the past four months, a group of individuals from our community has increasingly grown into their own echo chamber in which their commentary has become increasingly hostile over time. Despite their conversations growing more bigoted and hateful, both towards us and various other groups of people across society at large, these conversations were being had in a non-GenesysGo owned, private, invite-only Discord. However much we might disagree with any and all forms of hate speech, it was not the GenesysGo server in which these conversations were occurring. Therefore, we simply ignored the conversations as it is their right to state their opinions just as much as it is our right to disagree with them. That said, the tipping point for the GenGo team occurred last week when members of this echo chamber began harassing and making threatening statements towards the GenesysGo team and appeared to begin taking steps toward carrying out those threats. Additionally, a common practice we observed was for members of this group to say increasingly disturbing things and then delete their comments minutes or hours later, implying that they were aware that what they were saying was not okay. This was incredibly disturbing as we have observed more radicalized and hostile behavior from these individuals as time went on and, given that we had been witnessing statements from these long-time supporters that, six months ago, we would not have thought possible, we ultimately had to ask what else might be possible... hence the decision to ban this group from our Discord. We also made the decision to block these individuals on Twitter as we were concerned that they would go out of their way to damage our community, our reputation, and our project, even if that meant damaging themselves in the process. Sadly, this group, in their outrage, proved our fears to be warranted. Unfortunately, several members of the GenGo community who were adjacent to this group might have potentially been caught up in these bans as it quickly became clear to us that somebody was mirroring our private community channels to this radicalized community. To anyone who feels they were unjustly banned, we sincerely apologize. At this time, no one has reached out to any members of the team to appeal their bans, but please know you can send a friend request on Discord at any time! While we understand that there are some who may consider this a form of censorship, we would like to remind everyone that hate speech and threatening speech are not protected speech. We at GenesysGo are not the arbiters of truth nor do we attempt to be, but we do draw the line at obsessing over members of our team to the point of threats. Obviously, it is very easy for these individuals to say that they were just kidding, and we are sure they will be posting that in the near future. However, we have no way of separating jokes from serious comments and thus must act accordingly. Blockchain was built on the principles of openness, collaboration, and the idea that together, wagmi... to that end, threatening the privacy and/or safety of anyone in any community is unacceptable. It is the opposite of what blockchain stands for. We are truly sorry to anyone who was unjustly caught up in these very unfortunate events, but please remember we're human too. Sometimes events move fast, and the faster things move, the more possibility there is for mistakes to happen. We're under no pretenses that this situation was any different, and we are happy to correct any of our mistakes! These events have in no way dampened our enthusiasm or dedication towards Shadow Drive! We're very proud of what we've shipped to the community thus far, it's no small feat to take something from concept to a live platform supporting an ever growing number of daily active users. We appreciate all the love and support we've received from the Solana ecosystem and we look forward to the continued expansion and enhancement of the Shdw platform!
